This play is about remembering. Remembering the past and acknowledging the importance that it has on the trajectory of one's future. If one cannot remember their past, they will never be able to live out their true future. I think that throughout Anon’s Journey, we see how he cannot move on, settle down, and start living his life, without remembering who he is, and where he came from first. Which is an unfortunate reality to many people, and is depicted as the chorus of refugees, who from their text, do everything in their power to remember and hold on to who they were before chasing the idea of a better life. In my design i chose to put the boat- from which he fell and later washed up on the shore- always visible, as a sort of reminder, or an anchor to who he is and what happened to him. The mirrors on the spinning flats also serve as a tool to help him remember who he is and where he came from. All of the sliding and the spinning flats showcase how his journey is ongoing, and he is moving through his life but at the same time still can't manage to grasp onto who he really is. The entire set is different shades of gray, but only the boat is on color, I chose this in order to highlight how the boat is the last remaining part- that he can remember- of who he is. I wanted it to feel like the actual journey that he is going on is in his mind, going from one place to the next, trying to figure out who he is, and the boat being the only thing in color, and always being visible on stage as a constant reminder of who he is. I wanted the set to feel like he was stuck in some sort of limbo, trying really hard to get out and find himself. Every element that appears in color acts as a reminder to who he once was, and what he is trying so hard to get back. I wanted everything to feel confusing, the same way Anon was feeling. I'm certain that with help of costumes and lighting that limbo affect, and not knowing whether the people are real or just in Anon’s imagination, could be achieved successfully.
