Design Concept
My concept centers on wet mud as the show’s governing metaphor: the texture that clings, slows, and stains, how it looks, sounds, and feels when you step into it. That’s Woyzeck: stuck, dragged down, always marked, whether by the sergeant’s authority or by his class. Paired with a tunnel image, a long, tightening corridor, this gives the production a clear psychological frame: the world narrows as his choices do, and even the light feels far away. I’ll build a wintry, rain-soaked atmosphere with layered textures and a restrained palette of cold blues, greys, and earth tones, so every surface carries a damp sheen. Though the play hints at warmer weather, the historical rain around Saxony/Leipzig, often heavy in summer, supports this muddy world. The result is an environment that makes each step feel costly, and every attempt at escape leaves a mark.
